The movement against the austerity measures is growing on all fronts. This includes among students. They organized themselves in response to the cuts that Zuhal Demir intends to impose on Dutch-language higher education. Since then, they have carried out various successful actions through initiatives from student movements in the various student cities.
Due to their pressure, combined with reactions from various other quarters, the decision and vote regarding the cuts to student scholarships have been repeatedly postponed because the government cannot reach an agreement. The objective is therefore to stop these cuts.
That is why various student cities are joining forces and will all gather in Brussels at Brussels Central Station on Thursday, May 7 at 2 p.m. to make it clear, on behalf of all students, professors, staff, etc., that they are against the tightening of study progress measures, against the cuts, and in favor of investments in our higher education.
The demonstration is being co-organized by various student councils. There will also be a staff section within the demonstration. Not only are cuts being made directly to scholarships and indirectly to students through stricter study progress measures, but the draft decree also provides for structural cuts of 46.3 million euros per year at universities and colleges.
The battle against the cuts has not yet been won. Mass mobilization of students and staff is necessary.
That is why ACOD UGent wants to call upon everyone who can to participate in this demonstration!
Please note: no strike notice has been filed for this day. Participation therefore takes place in your own time, for example by taking vacation leave.
In various cities, a collective departure by train to Brussels is scheduled:
- Leuven: Martelarenplein at 13:00
- Hasselt: Hasselt Station at 12:00
- Ghent: Ghent-Sint-Pieters Station at 12:40
- Antwerp: Antwerp Central Station at 12:40
